Why Meditation is Key in Mediumship
Many of us have busy minds that like to chatter away all day. Maybe you wake up in mid-thought or internal dialogue conversation like I do?
Most of us will have heard about the left brain versus right brain theory. Perhaps someone has told you you’re very ‘left’-brained in your approach to life. As it happens, while we have two sides to our brain and they function differently, there is still an interaction between the two sides. The left brain likes to be in charge, it’s the chatty mind operating in ‘thinking words’, using logic, use of linear thinking, our left brain likes facts and to problem solve. Whereas the right brain loves to daydream. That was me in school always staring out the window and using my imagination. Which is also a right-brain thing, imagination, as well as creativity, connecting with feelings, intuition and visualisations.
Over many years of development, I finally realised the huge benefit of meditation to the development of my mediumship (both trance and evidential) and why it is fundamental to try to master the mind.
When I meet students that struggle to maintain a connection with the spirit communicator or to give the information they are receiving without interfering with it, I advise them to meditate more. Occasionally the response is, I can’t meditate… Even if you have a busy, chatty mind, the art of meditation is to slow down the noisy-I’m-in-control-interfering left brain so that the right brain can crack on connecting with spirit and giving what is received.
It takes time and discipline, like most things. However, even someone with a rambling mind can benefit from meditation. The side effects are great. You feel less stressed. You become more in control of your thoughts, it increases positive thoughts, you’re more peaceful and you deal with difficult or stressful situations better when you meditate regularly.
Why it’s important as developing and working medium to maintain meditation:
- You get out of the way by subduing the left brain.
- You stop doubting because the left brain likes to be in charge.
- You stop the left brain from interfering with what you’re receiving.
As mediums, we can use the skill of meditation to quieten our bossy left brain. It helps to alter our brain wave activity, which in basic terms subdues the activity in the left and allows the right brain to do its thing.
Mediums are able to receive information from spirit through the clair-senses, the main ones being Clairsentience – feeling, Clairaudience – hearing and Clairvoyance – seeing. The spirit world need to work through our imagination, our visualisation and our creativity – right brain!
It is necessary to create the discipline to alter your awareness. In this way, you remain in charge of when you are open to receiving information from the spirit and when you are focused on daily life.
More often than not, untrained mediums will have spontaneous experiences. It is when their left brain is tired or out of the way. For example, most instances occur at night. This is because the left brain is tired from being bossy all day, it’s got nothing to do with it being night-time. Some people find ironing relaxing (goodness knows why), nevertheless, it allows them time to ‘switch off’ (the left brain) which allows for a ‘spontaneous’ experience to occur.
Ironically, when we apply some logic (left brain) to our right brain mediumistic experiences, mixed with experience and knowledge, things all start to fall into place and make sense. Then we can really get to work exercising those spiritual muscles to improve our mediumistic abilities.
For the trance mediums out there, meditation and the discipline of getting yourself out of the way is essential to your development and progression. Quite often in the development of trance, we go through a tiresome time with the ‘is it me or is it spirit’ phase. By disciplining your mind and knowing for yourself when you (the left brain) is out of the way, then you will come to understand the blending of the mind or spirit with your mind. There will always be an aspect of yourself involved, the idea is to go from 90% you to at least 80-90% spirit. Again, that takes time and discipline as well as the natural aptitude in this area.
Even if you find meditation hard to do (because you have an overactive left brain), just by slowing down your conscious thinking mind you will still help to slow down the brainwaves on the left side, which essentially causes interference, obstacles and hurdles to the right side of the brain wave activity, that the spirit world then need to manoeuvre through.
There are many meditation options available online including a downloadable cd I have done called ‘The Soul is the Compass’. It includes 3 exercises, one of which is ‘Mastering the Mind’ and an exercise called ‘The Power of You’ which helps take you to the next step in understanding energy and the power within. “Space for Spirit” is the third exercise. Available for download, RRP £10 plus postage and packaging. The download copy is now available for just £8!
