Sensitive Souls 6 February 2020 – Posted in: Reflections – Tags: #MediumPennyHayward #Medium #Mediumship #Psychic #Sensitivity #Energy #Consciousness #KindToSelf #PersonalGrowth
A very good friend and I were chatting one day about what I do as a medium and the effects it can have on the medium physically, mentally and emotionally. She asked; Geeze man, how do you stay sane? Which made me reflect and understand how far I had come in my development and understanding of me as a person and a medium.
It’s really important to recognise these three aspects and the demands the medium experiences – physically, mentally and emotionally. It’s not just confined to the development phase, it’s through our life and it increases when we use our psychic and mediumistic skills on a regular basis.
Generally, psychics and mediums are naturally more sensitive and we unsurprisingly pick up on other people’s energy or the energy of a place. We can grow up feeling misunderstood or misunderstanding ourselves because we react to those energies and often don’t realise it isn’t us at all, it’s other people or places. In turn, other people usually think we are ‘different’ because of the way we act and react to things they aren’t as sensitive to. Usually, it isn’t until we mature and go through personal difficulties that we discover we have these abilities. Our soul pulls and guides us to people or experiences that eventually help us uncover this aspect of ourselves that we have tried to ignore or suppress through our lack of understanding.
I found myself telling my friend that it took me a long time to realise that my private emotional outbursts weren’t actually me going crazy or being depressed, although at first, I did wonder. The more I developed my mediumship and used my psychic ability I would have moments of crying at the smallest thing on TV. Or just ‘randomly’ feeling overwhelmed and over-emotional. One day, I realised I just needed to let out emotions.
When you work as a medium, you can’t help but be touched by the emotions of the recipient and or the communicator. You come to hear of other people’s stories and how they have survived and overcome adversity. Perhaps you resonate through your own experiences. Unless you are a robot you can’t help but be affected emotionally.
I came to understand it as a residual emotional build-up. And it needed to come out. I wasn’t consciously holding onto these emotions and experiences. I’m a medium, a conduit through which emotions are felt and expressed. My strongest sense is Clairsentience, which translates to Clear-Feeling. Once this made sense to me, I would just let the tears come and go and I always felt better afterwards. In accepting this I not only found it easier to work as a medium and let things flow, I also found I understood myself and my abilities more. It was then easier to understand energy, what belongs to me and what belongs elsewhere, meaning I didn’t have to carry or be affected by emotional baggage or energy that wasn’t mine – that was a very freeing experience.
When we work as mediums, we are turning our awareness, our consciousness, to another energetic vibration to be able to receive information. We need to put our own thoughts and feelings to one side in order to be able to receive the thoughts and feelings of a spirit contact. When we do this, we are altering the brain wave activity. This is something that has been measured by scientists. Therefore, we need to be kind to ourselves.
We need to recognise that by altering our brain wave activity we are putting ourselves into an alternate state of being. We are altering our consciousness. Just as meditation and sleep are altered states, except mediumship is a higher state. The more we do it, the longer we hold it and depending on the type of mediumship we are doing, it has an overall effect on us. We need to give ourselves healing and kindness.
We need to be ‘normal’. We need downtime. Otherwise, we will burn out. Which I discovered and experienced for myself when I was working full time, serving churches most weekends and some evenings. I was also going to development classes and running my own development groups, on top of also giving private readings. I never had time to just be. I never had time to have fun. I never had time for my friends. That wasn’t healthy. In the end, I had to learn to say no, find balance and be kind to myself.
Equally, just as an athlete needs to train and workout, we, as mediums, need to train and workout. I believe that when we work as mediums we are not just altering our state of consciousness. There are also chemical reactions which affect our physical wellbeing and energy if we don’t put in the time and effort to maintain our spiritual energy and wellbeing. This means we need to spend time filling up our spiritual cup.
If you are interested in developing yourself personally as well as mediumistically, I will be doing a workshop at Colchester SNU Spiritualist Church on 21 March. Event details are on my Facebook Page, Penny Hayward: Medium – here’s the link to the event.
